Domino SuperSearch

In the June issue of the LotusUserGroup.org Developer Tips Newsletter Duffbert writes about the Domino SuperSearch over at martinscott.com. Although a nice application what if the we had an application like that which also searched through all the blogs listed at dominoblogs.com? Wouldn’t that be cool and a nice way to “take a penny, leave a penny”? 🙂

If dominoblogs.com emitted an OPML file it could be consumed by a site that allows users to search the sites. Only issue I can see it the difference between search interfaces but it could be solved by people also submitting a search URL to the dominoblogs.com site.

What do you think?

  1. A couple of thoughts:

    1) I believe Anrew Pollard sells a tool that does this sort of thing.

    2) Domino Developer Network had a search tool that skimmed over all the weblogs hosted with their service; each ‘blog owner could set-up a search query that worked with their database design, and the tool then did its thing.

  2. Andrew Pollack’s NCT Search tool is killer (we use it), but I don’t think it applies in this instance. All these DominoBlogs are hosted on different servers and in different domains.

I think an approach like the SuperSearch would be great, but I’d like to see all the results integrated into one list. I often want to do exactly that on the LDD forums (search both 4/5 and 6/7 and get one list). Ive come *this close* to writing my own a few times now. Maybe this idea should be converted into an OpenNTF project?

  3. If we can find the appropriate search tool it would be easy enough to extend dominoblogs.com to store search URLs, but I think Rob is right – because all these blogs are hosted on different domains, servers and using different blogging software it might be hard to come up with a way to search accurately.

The OPML files for dominoblogs.com are almost ready – hopefully after this weekend 10/11 June.

  4. There are tools out there for doing stuff like this. E.g: rollyo.com. Here’s one I just created – Domino Sites search. It uses Yahoo to search mine, Mike’s, yours and Julian’s sites.
What would be really cool is if we all provided search results in A9 OpenSearch format. Then we really could “roll our own”.

  5. I really like the suggestion to use the OpenSearch format that Jake suggest. The format is open and uses RSS or ATOM as the underlying format which should make it very easy to implement by Domino bloggers. Most will only need to have their search engine output RSS instead of HTML. Nice.
